Washington Puts a Price on Dollar Access
Bessent's rule goes live, Saudi quits China's mBridge, Iraq rations dollars, and Iran hands Washington terms that all ask for money.
Wednesday, September 23. At midnight, with the leaders still inside the perimeter, the US Treasury's rule on Iranian aviation went live. Bessent had already reduced it to a price list. Fuel. Landing. Tickets. Provide any of them to a sanctioned Iranian carrier and you are, in his words, "knocked out of the dollar system."
Yesterday we told you the week's decisions would be made in the side meetings. They were, and they all rhymed. Riyadh walked out of China's payment rail. Ankara grounded every Iran route. Baghdad cancelled Tehran's flights and cut its own travelers' official dollars to twice a year. And Iran's foreign minister sat in a UN room for 3 hours and handed over terms that asked, three different ways, for its money back.
Different capitals, one currency. Washington spent the week showing every government in the region that the dollar is the admission price for every deal on the table, and every one of them paid inside 72 hours. Iraq has a seat in that story most of the community has not noticed yet.
