Is the Iraqi Dinar a Scam?
The currency is real. Some of the people selling it, and selling dates for it, are not. How to tell the difference before you spend a dollar.
The currency is real. Some of the things sold around it are not. Those are two separate facts, and most articles on this question flatten them into one.
The Iraqi dinar is the legal tender of a sovereign country, issued by the Central Bank of Iraq, with an official rate of roughly 1,300 dinars to the US dollar. Buying it is legal. Holding it is legal. Iraq itself sits on roughly 145 billion barrels of proven oil, the 4th or 5th largest reserve on Earth depending on who is counting, plus vast undeveloped gas. A currency priced where the dinar is priced, over ground like that, is the reason serious people watch it at all.
Now the other fact. A real currency attracts real predators, and dinar holders meet three kinds.
First, counterfeit and grey-market notes. The fix is simple: buy from a bank or a registered dealer, keep your receipts, and verify the notes yourself. A cheap blue-light currency detector and the CBI's published security features settle it in an evening.
Second, sellers who promise a rate. No dealer on this planet knows what the dinar will reprice at, and any seller quoting you a future rate as part of the sale is selling you a story, not a currency.
Third, the date merchants. Every week someone announces the revaluation is Tuesday. It has been Tuesday for 20 years. Anyone handing you a date is guessing or selling, and it is usually both.
Where does that leave the honest holder? Here is our position. We research this full-time and our read is that the repricing is real and the groundwork for it is being laid in public: the banking cleanup, the settlement rails, the budget mechanics. What nobody outside the room holds is the when. So hold what you can afford to set down and forget, buy only authentic notes from verifiable sellers, and ignore anyone who claims to know the date.
