Iraq Completes Its Government
Iraq's parliament filled the last cabinet seats and Washington hit an Iraqi bank tied to Iran. What it means for the IQD and the RV.
Friday, October 16. After 5 months with empty seats, Iraq's government is complete.
On Thursday night parliament voted through the seats that had sat empty since May. Interior. Defence. Nine more ministries. Three deputy prime ministers. Every one of them took the oath before the session closed. Only one post was left open, the Ministry of Migration, which was put off because the parties could not agree on a name.
If you are new here: al-Zaidi took office on May 14 with 9 of his 23 cabinet seats still empty. For 5 months the police ministry and the defence ministry had no one in charge. As of Thursday they do.
As regular readers know, we track two lines at once. In Baghdad's politics, the full cabinet comes before the budget. In the currency, the cut to 1,500 came first, then one price for the dollar, then the new notes, and the higher value last. The cabinet gate closed on Thursday. Today: who got what in the vote, the Iraqi bank Washington froze on the same day, a new rule on travellers' dollars that bears on the street price, and the budget, which is now the next gate.
