What to Say When the Bank Asks About Your Iraqi Dinar
The exact words to use when a banker asks about your Iraqi dinar: what it is, where it came from, how much and when. All true, none naming it.
Sooner or later a banker asks about the money. What is it? Where is it coming from? Why do you hold it? For a holder of Iraqi dinar, this is the moment many people freeze, because they do not want to lie and they do not want to say the word that ends the meeting. IR-032 Getting Past No: When the Bank Asks About Your Currency gives the exact words for each question. None of them name the holding. All of them are true.
Why the bank asks
The questions are not a sign the banker suspects you. Banks in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK and the EU must understand who a client is, where their money comes from and what the account is for. A private desk asks business owners, heirs and retirees the same questions every week. Answered calmly, they put you on file as the client the desk wants.
The words first, the paperwork later
Before you are a client, you answer in words that are true and complete without naming the holding. Asked what the money is: "Assets I have held for some years. I will walk you through all of it, with the paperwork, once we are working together." Asked how much: "What is your minimum for private banking?" and then, only if true at today's value, "Yes, I comfortably fit within that range." For most holders it depends on the event, so: "I expect to fit comfortably within that range." Asked when: "The timing is not fixed. I am deliberately not working to a date." Once you are working together, the paperwork names everything for you: each purchase with its receipt and the bank statement that paid for it.
The one answer that closes the door
Declining to go further is ordinary and forgiven. Saying something untrue is not. If a banker asks straight out whether it is to do with Iraq, the answer is never no. The holder says it will be walked through with the paperwork once they are working together. A borrowed story, such as an inheritance that is not one, falls apart the day the paperwork is opened, and banks can close accounts over false information.
