An adviser at Iraq's Central Bank said on Tuesday that the gap between Baghdad's street dollar and the bank's rate will stay open as long as merchants need cash dollars for their trade with Iran, much of which sanctions keep out of Iraq's banks.
Over the past week one official dollar channel after another widened, and Baghdad's street still closed Tuesday at 168,700 IQD for $100, against the bank's 152,000. Late on Tuesday night an official source said that, on the Prime Minister's direction, the Al-Sheeb crossing with Iran would close from Wednesday morning, with the other Iran crossings to follow.
