What proof do I need to exchange Iraqi dinar?
What documentation dinar holders need at exchange: purchase receipts, source of funds, and why the paper trail matters more than the notes.
The short answer: your paper trail. When the exchange window opens, the counter you walk up to sits inside the regulated banking system, and that system runs on documentation. The notes prove what you hold. The paperwork proves how you came to hold it.
Keep every record of the purchase. Dealer invoices, order confirmations, an eBay or auction receipt, the bank or card statement showing the payment leaving your account. If the receipt carries your name, that is your source-of-funds story in one page. If it does not, pair it with the statement that does. A receipt plus the matching payment record answers the 2 questions any bank must ask: where did this come from, and who paid for it.
This is not a technicality. As covered in How Dinar Holders Get Paid, the payout for a foreign holder runs through the international banking layer, and that layer is a compliance gate before it is a teller. Banks screen for anti-money-laundering rules on any large currency transaction. Holders with a clean file walk through. Holders with a shoebox of bare notes and no story get delays, questions, and in the worst case a refusal.
What to do now, while there is no queue: put the file together. One folder, paper or digital, holding the receipts, the statements, and a simple list of what you hold by denomination. Verify your notes are genuine while you are at it, using the checks in How to Tell if Iraqi Dinar Is Real. 10 minutes of filing today saves you standing in a compliance office later.
The published position is consistent on this: the groundwork, not the timing, is what separates holders who get paid smoothly from holders who get stuck. The documentation gate is real, and it is the part you control completely.
