Official rate and market price, in plain words

The official rate is set by the Central Bank. It is the price the Central Bank and the banks it supplies use. The bank picks when to change it. There are 3 changes since 2020 that we have on record: December 2020, February 2023 and October 7, 2026.

Baghdad's price is set by buyers and sellers in the city's exchange shops. Iraqi press reports give the close for Baghdad and Erbil, and we log it. Since the October 7, 2026 change, the Baghdad close has run between 12,150 and 17,500 above the official public price per $100.

Two ways of quoting trip people up. Central Bank figures are dinars per $1, while Baghdad's market quotes dinars per $100. So 168,250 per $100 is 1,682.50 per $1.

This page reports prices and gives no dates. The rate is the Central Bank's call, and when it makes a change the bank says so. You can get that notice by email with our free rate alert.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Iraqi dinar rate today?

The Central Bank of Iraq's official rate is 1,520 dinars to the US dollar for the public, 1,510 for banks and 1,500 for the Finance Ministry. It has been that since October 7, 2026. In Baghdad's exchange market, $100 closed at 168,250 dinars on Monday, October 26, 2026, which is 1,682.50 dinars per dollar. Both numbers are in the tables on this page, with dates and sources.

What is the difference between the official rate and the street rate?

Official means the price the Central Bank and the banks it supplies use. Street means the price in Baghdad's exchange shops, set by buyers and sellers and reported each day in Iraqi press reports. Since October 7, 2026 the Baghdad price has been above the official one. On Monday, October 26, 2026 it was 16,250 dinars higher per $100. Only the official rate is the Central Bank's decision, and the bank announces it. The street price moves with the market.

When did the official Iraqi dinar rate change?

Iraq last changed it on October 7, 2026. The Finance Ministry rate moved from 1,300 to 1,500, the rate to banks from 1,310 to 1,510, and the public rate from 1,320 to 1,520 dinars per dollar. Before that, Iraq set the rate at 1,300 on February 7, 2023, and cut it from 1,182 to 1,450 in December 2020. Our article Iraqi Dinar Devaluation 2026: What the New 1,500 Rate Means If You Hold IQD has the full account of the October 7, 2026 decision.

Why is the market price higher than the official rate?

Official means what the Central Bank charges. Market means what people pay for dollars outside that channel, and the gap is the distance between the two. Trade with Iran is one reason the market price stays high, the Central Bank has said, and we cover that in The Dollar Gap Runs Through Iran. Baghdad's price is also what the government wants lower: it has said it wants 155,000 per $100, and we set out that plan in Iraq Targets One Unified Exchange Rate. On Monday, October 26, 2026 the close was 13,250 above that figure.

Will the Iraqi dinar revalue?

The rate is the Central Bank's call, and it announces a change when it makes one. We read October 7, 2026 as step one of three: one price first, then the zeros off the notes, then a higher value, as set out in Devalue, Delete, Revalue. We give no date. To hear about the next change the day it happens, use our free rate alert.

How many Iraqi dinars is 1 US dollar?

At the Central Bank's official public rate, $1 is 1,520 dinars, so 1,000,000 dinars is $657.89. At Baghdad's Monday, October 26, 2026 close, $1 was 1,682.50 dinars, so 1,000,000 dinars is $594.35. These are Iraq's prices. What a dealer outside Iraq pays or charges is a different number, and we do not track it.

How much is a 25,000 dinar note worth in US dollars?

At the Central Bank's official public rate, 25,000 dinars is $16.45. At Baghdad's Monday, October 26, 2026 close it is $14.86. These are Iraq's prices. What a dealer outside Iraq pays is a different number.

Why do people expect the Iraqi dinar to be worth $3.22 or $3.47?

Because the dinar was once worth more than $3. From 1973 Iraq's official rate was about $3.38 per dinar, and after a 5% cut in 1982 it was $3.22, the rate it held until the 1990 war. Those pre-war rates are the anchor many holders use, and $3.47 is a figure widely quoted alongside them. Today the Central Bank's published rates are 1,500, 1,510 and 1,520 dinars per $1. Iraq has more behind its currency than it did in 1990, with larger proven oil reserves, so we would not rule a return to that level out. Any change would come as its own announcement by the Central Bank.

Why is the Iraqi dinar so low?

The official rate is a price the Central Bank sets, so the number per dollar is its decision, not a market verdict. Our full answer, with the history behind it, is in Why Is the Iraqi Dinar Valued So Low?.

Where does the data on this page come from?

Official rates come from the Central Bank's statement of October 7, 2026 and the news reports on the cabinet decision. Baghdad and Erbil closes come from the daily exchange-shop reports in the Iraqi press, which we log in our Iraqi Dinar Brief each day. Every row links to its source. If we did not log a close for a day, the day is left out rather than estimated.
