Iraqi Dinar Brief - September 7, 2026: Smaller Notes Only Mean One Thing

Iraq's Parliamentary Finance Committee says it wants to print a banknote smaller than the 250-dinar note. At the official rate of 1,310 to the dollar, a 250 note is worth about 19 US cents, and anything under it is worth pennies. No state prints paper that costs more to make than it is worth. It prints small change only for a currency it expects to be worth far more than it is today.

The line came out of the same weekend sitting where the Central Bank governor, Nizar Nasir Hussein, put numbers on the record he had never split in public before: 107 trillion dinars issued, only about 40 trillion in real circulation, and the other 67 trillion sitting outside the banking system. He named the currency changeover as the tool that drags that hidden money back into the light, and he drew the jurisdiction line - changing the currency is the bank's own authority, deleting the zeros needs parliament.
