Iraqi Dinar Brief - August 21, 2026: Iraq's Militias Lose Their Paymaster

Iran's central bank governor went on his own state television this week and said the words no Iranian official had said before: oil exports have stopped, and Tehran cannot reach its own reserves. Days earlier the same man sat in Baghdad's central bank asking after billions in trapped Iranian funds.

That confession lands hardest in Iraq. The armed factions still refusing to hand their weapons to the Iraqi state have run for 2 decades on the money he just declared dry. And the week showed what that means: Iraqi forces seized 49 drones and shut 71 fake faction offices, the loudest holdout published conditions instead of a refusal, and Tehran itself endorsed putting faction weapons under the state.

Behind the weapons file, the paperwork kept moving. The Kurdistan Region filed the first numbers into Iraq's 2027 budget, the paper that carries the dinar's next number. New export routes carry contracts dated from September 1. And in Washington, Treasury Secretary Bessent booked a Monday press conference to detail the full Iran isolation package.
