Iraqi Dinar Brief - August 20, 2026: Economic D-Day

On Wednesday evening the White House posted a statement from the President announcing what he called the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country. He named it himself: an economic D-Day. And he listed the targets: oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies. Any country that keeps one of those lifelines open to Iran now faces what he called tremendous economic consequences.

The same day, the UAE halted all trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran, until further notice. That was Iran's largest trading partner and its last major financial hub, gone in a day.

And Iraq stood in the middle of all of it. Iran's parliament speaker landed in Baghdad. Iraq's own speaker asked him for special consideration for Iraqi oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz. While that conversation ran, the Central Bank of Iraq finished a sanctions compliance course for its staff, one day after receiving Iran's central bank governor.
