Iraqi Dinar Brief - July 27, 2026: Is Iraq Ready to Drop the Zeros?

Monday, July 27. While the world watched the war pause over Iran for a second day, Baghdad spent the weekend rebuilding the machinery of its own central bank. The loud rumour everyone chased is the one thing that has not been decided.

The Central Bank of Iraq approved its first full internal restructure under the new governor, effective July 30. It upgraded its supervision of the cash economy and pulled the Basra, Mosul and Erbil branches under direct control. In the same window, non-oil revenue hit a record 16% of government income, up from under 5% before 2020.

The corruption sweep kept climbing. The al-Jumaili case seizures reached 127 billion dinars and $24 million, plus property and gold, with 15 arrested. Treasury widened its sanctions on the Zanjani money network the same week.

An economic expert floated removing one zero from the dinar. No official has confirmed it, and here is the part almost nobody explains: removing a zero is a redenomination. It changes the face of the note, not what the note buys. It is not the reprice this community has waited on for 20 years. The rumour is the noise. The machinery is the story.

The number on the note has not moved yet. The country underneath it is being rebuilt to carry a different one.
