Iraqi Dinar Brief - June 2, 2026: Cleaning Baghdad's House

Tuesday June 2, 2026. Iraq's new Prime Minister put a $200 million bribe offer on live television and arrested the official who carried it. Then he built a council that sends corruption cases straight to a judge. Baghdad is cleaning house, and it is doing it at speed.

The week did not stop at the Oil Ministry. The same ruling bloc that handed al-Zaidi the corruption file handed him the weapons file: a formal authorisation as Commander-in-Chief to disarm every militia faction in Iraq, with no exceptions written in. The Coordination Framework put it in writing on Monday.

To see why that matters, look at Lebanon. In 1989 the Taif Agreement ordered every militia to disarm. Every one did, except Hezbollah. Lebanon spent the decades after unable to decide its own war and peace. Iraq this week wrote no exemption. The factions Treasury tied to the smuggled oil and the weapons pipeline are named inside the order, not above it.

One continent away, the International Monetary Fund sat back down with Venezuela, a state locked out since 2019, to begin returning billions in frozen reserves. The same door is the door Iraq is walking toward. Iran, the country being shut out instead of let in, claimed a missile strike on a ship off Iraq's main port.
